Beschreibung
Rickshaw Boy (or Camel Xiangzi) tells the tragic story of Xiangzi, a rickshaw puller in old Beijing (then known as Beiping) in pre-revolutionary China. Hailing from the countryside, Xiangzi battles against life with tenacity and stubborn determination, which forms the central plot of the novel. The outcome of this struggle, however, ends in Xiangzi's failure. The profound realism of this novel lies in the fact that it not only depicts the harsh living environment that strips away Xiangzi's material possessions, but also portrays his spiritual degeneration after his life ideals are destroyed. Rickshaw Boy is a story of moral decay resulting from the confrontation between an innocent peasant and modern urban civilization, containing reflections on the relationship between the malaise of urban civilization and human nature. Through this work, Lao She seeks to reveal his deep concern about the harm inflicted upon human nature by a diseased urban civilization. Works like this one, in which Lao She explores the origins of modern civilization's maladies, were quite unique in the literature of the 1930s.
