Beschreibung
In the pre-dawn darkness of August 22, 1831, a small group of enslaved men gathered near a woodland pond in Southampton County, Virginia, and began a rebellion that would change American history. Led by Nat Turner - a self-taught lay preacher who had spent a decade receiving divine visions and preparing a revolutionary mandate - the insurrection swept across the county's farms in thirty-six hours of violence, killing more than fifty white men, women, and children before the Virginia militia stopped its advance three miles from the county seat. The Southampton Insurrection. tells the full story of this pivotal event: the extraordinary man who organised it, the theology that drove it, the thirty-six hours that executed it, and the decades of political and legal consequence that followed. Drawing on primary sources including Turner's own Confessions, the Virginia legislative record, and the full body of historical scholarship on antebellum slavery, this narrative nonfiction account reconstructs every dimension of the rebellion - the conspiracy assembled in secret, the moral complexity of its violence, the judicial aftermath, the Virginia slavery debates of 1831 to 1832, and the chain of events connecting Southampton County to the Civil War. Nat Turner did not fail. He forced American history to reckon with a truth it had been refusing for two centuries. It is still reckoning.
