Then he founded the most bookish school of thought of the twentieth century and spent the rest of his life warning that reason was quietly eating itself. Max Horkheimer is remembered, when he is remembered at all, as the quieter half of a famous partnership and the author of sentences that require a running start. This book proposes that he left behind something far more useful than a mood, and something far more portable than a philosophy. He left behind a procedure. The procedure is disarmingly simple. Before accepting any confident statement - from a government, a laboratory, a hospital, a rating agency, a search engine, or a philosopher - separate the parts of it that were actually established from the parts that were merely announced, and then ask whether the announced parts can carry the weight being placed on them. Most confident statements come with a bill attached. Almost nobody reads it. Horkheimer applied this procedure to the sciences of his day and to the society that paid for them, and he never gave it a name. Here it is named, sharpened, and turned loose on a world he did not live to see: performance dashboards, university rankings, clinical targets, credit scores, and machines that supply advice faster than any human being can examine it. It is then turned, without mercy and without malice, on critical theory itself, which turns out to have an unpaid bill of its own - and to have known it. Finally the book takes up the argument Horkheimer abandoned. Between a reason that claims to know what is good and a reason that knows only how to be useful, he sensed a third possibility and could not state it. Stating it is the work of the closing chapters, and it leads somewhere he would have recognized: expect the worst, and attempt the good anyway. No mathematics. No prior reading required.
