The book also explores the terrifying forms of Bhairava, Kālī, Tārā, Chinnamastā, Cāmuṇḍā, yoginīs, and ḍākinīs, explaining the significance of skulls, blood, weapons, cremation grounds, impurity, transgression, and controlled confrontation with fear. Tantra is situated within the political and material worlds that sustained it. Courts, temples, monasteries, artisans, hereditary ritual families, householders, ascetics, patrons, rulers, and village communities all participated in its history. The book distinguishes theological praise of feminine power from the actual social position of women, while also considering female teachers, patrons, initiates, queens, ritual partners, and embodiments of the Goddess.
