Most people interpret the Ten Commandments at face value, accepting whatever narrative or agenda it might carry. But these commandments had very different meanings at the time of their creation, when Moses delivered the stone tablets from Mount Sinai. "Do not commit adultery". was not a modern, sweeping mandate on general sexual ethics-in its original legal context, it specifically prohibited violating and ruining another man's marriage contract. "Do not take the Lord's name in vain". literally reads "do not carry the name into emptiness. ". It is not about using profanity; it is about claiming to act in God's name while behaving dishonestly. "Thou shalt not kill". uses the specific verb ratsach.
