The Theogony

Hesiod's Theogony is one of the earliest surviving works of Greek literature and the foundational account of the origins of the gods in ancient Greek mythology. Composed in the eighth or seventh century BCE, Theogony presents a sweeping poetic narrative of the creation of the cosmos and the genealogy of the Greek gods. Beginning with the emergence of primordial forces such as Chaos, Gaia, and Eros, Hesiod traces the successive generations of divine beings that shaped the structure of the universe. Through vivid storytelling and formal poetic structure, Hesiod recounts the struggles for power among the Titans and the Olympian gods, culminating in the rise of Zeus as ruler of the cosmos.
