As a post-war Japanese thinker of global influence, Kojin Karatani has, since emerging in the Japanese literary scene in the 1960s, consistently refused to settle within a single domain, continuously nomadic across various fields of knowledge. Through a mode of criticism that spans literature, philosophy, social theory, and political economy, he has persistently challenged established systems of knowledge. However, this multifaceted theoretical orientation is both captivating and often perplexing: How should we understand his seemingly divergent intellectual pursuits. Is there a deeper internal logic and developmental trajectory underlying his thinking. Toward the "Outside" -the first systematic monograph on Kojin Karatani in Chinese-language academia-takes the concept of the "outside" as its core framework and traces the development of Karatani's thought through four stages: from his early critique of literary form, to his breakthrough of the discursive space of traditional Japanese literature, followed by his turn toward "postmodern thought," and finally to his later construction of macro-level theories and institutional critique from a global perspective. The author not only offers a close reading of Karatani's major texts but also situates his thought holistically within the historical context of post-war Japanese society.
