In this seminal 1829 essay, Jonathan Dymond delivers a devastating three-pronged indictment of war that remains startlingly relevant today. Dymond exposes war as a triple catastrophe - a moral plague that reverses all the rules of morality and degrades the human soul; an economic engine of ruin that burdens nations with crushing debt and taxation while enriching only a few; and a logical fallacy where the distinction between "aggressive" and "defensive" war vanishes in the fury of slaughter. Dymond argues that the true cost of war is not merely counted in corpses or currency, but in the systematic erosion of virtue. He asserts that military life demands a "resignation of moral agency," forcing individuals to commit acts they know to be wrong under the guise of duty. Simultaneously, he dismantles the economic justification for conflict, revealing that the empty glory of conquest never outweighs the unpitied secrecy of domestic poverty and the massive transfer of wealth from the people to war contractors. Finally, he challenges the very legitimacy of defense, contending that once armies meet, the original cause is forgotten, and both parties become aggressors in a business of pure destruction. This book is not merely a plea for peace, but a rigorous philosophical demonstration that war is incompatible with both Christian ethics and rational self-interest. By weaving together the threads of spiritual decay, financial bankruptcy, and the impossibility of just violence, Dymond offers a comprehensive argument: that the only true security for a nation lies not in the sword, but in the unwavering adherence to moral law.
