Why does the Christian life feel so difficult when the gospel is supposed to be good news. Many believers sincerely trust that Jesus died to forgive their sins, yet they spend their lives trying-often unsuccessfully-to live up to Christian expectations. Rules replace relationship. Effort replaces freedom. Guilt replaces joy. What Is the Real Gospel. argues that this struggle is not the result of weak faith or lack of discipline, but of an incomplete understanding of the gospel itself. In this Scripture-rich and pastorally accessible book, Timothy Robert Decker shows that the New Testament presents salvation as far more than forgiveness. According to Scripture, Christ did not only die for sinners; He died as them. In Christ's death, our old self was crucified. In His resurrection, we receive an entirely new life-Christ Himself living in us. Central to this message is a renewed understanding of water baptism-not as a mere symbol or optional act of obedience, but as the Bible's own language of burial and resurrection participation. Tracing baptism through the teachings of Jesus, the book of Acts, and the Epistles, Decker demonstrates how the early church understood salvation as a unified experience of faith, baptism, and new life in the Spirit. Rejecting rule-based Christianity, What Is the Real Gospel. presents a vision of obedience that flows naturally from identity. Like branches connected to a vine, believers bear fruit not by striving, but by remaining united to Christ. The result is a life marked by freedom, transformation, and supernatural normalcy. Further, because He is eternal, this supernatural life of Christ in us is an eternal continuity-"now" is connected to "then"-and we can expect to increasingly shine with His glory, transcending death and being changed to His likeness forever. Written for Christians tired of trying harder, former believers who walked away in frustration, and seekers encountering the gospel afresh, this book offers a liberating return to the power, simplicity, and completeness of the real gospel.
